Blue Cross and Blue Shield
A group of 39 insurance companies in the United States. It provides health insurance to about one-third of the American population. Each affiliated company is separately incorporated to offer insurance in a single state or within a region. Primarily, it offers PPOs and HMOs, but it is also an administrator of Medicare. It is based in Chicago and traces its origins to 1929.

About The Blue Cross Blue Cross was started in 1929 by Justin Ford Kimball, at Baylor University in Dallas, Texas.
Most recently, Sokolow served as chief medical officer at Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Shoptaw, CEO of Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Little Rock, was elected to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association board of directors at its meeting in Chicago.
