Birr

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Birr
The currency of Ethiopia. It was introduced in 1945, replacing the East African shilling, though an earlier birr had been the currency prior to the East African campaign and the Italian occupation of Ethiopia. It is noted for its high rate of inflation, estimated at over 11% in 2005 and 41% in 2008. Interestingly, the official translation of the birr was "dollar" until 1976, when "birr" became the appropriate word in both Amharic and English.
