Informal; older, industrial companies involved in sectors considered "dirty" by some investors. Examples include companies in the coal mining or steel industries. Big uglies often are considered solid investments because they provide steady returns. However, the term implies that many investors ignore them because of ethical concerns or simply because they are not as trendy as newer companies.
