Benelux Customs Union
A treaty that eliminated tariffs on goods traded between Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. It also established a common tariff for goods originating outside the three countries. In other words, the Customs Union allowed the members to be treated as a single country for purposes of international trade. The treaty was signed in 1944, came into effect in 1948 and was superseded by the Benelux Economic Union in 1960. See also: Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union.
