Base Metal

A metal other than a precious metal; iron is often excluded as well. Common examples include aluminum, tin and copper. Base metals may be traded as commodities and have a variety of uses. As currencies have increasingly gone to fiat money systems, coins are usually made out of a base metal such as zinc.
