The administrative term for the jurisdictions of Guernsey and Jersey, which are areas outside the United Kingdom belonging to the British Crown and in most ways subject to the United Kingdom. The term derives from a medieval jurisdiction presided over by a type of medieval sheriff's deputy. A bailiwick is headed by a bailiff.
