Utterson beheld a marvelous number of degrees and hues of twilight; for here it would be dark like the back-end
of evening; and there would be a glow of a rich, lurid brown, like the light of some strange conflagration; and here, for a moment, the fog would be quite broken up, and a haggard shaft of daylight would glance in between the swirling wreaths.
A common problem in switched back-ends comes from collisions when switches are serially connected (Figure 1).
Over the past year, major storage system providers have steadily been migrating their systems to "switched back-end architectures" to improve system RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) characteristics and lower overall storage ownership costs.
For many merchants, this new offering will mean they can replace multiple terminals they rent that have different transaction processing back-ends with one terminal run through Maximum's back-end.
and loyalty program applications all on one terminal running through its own back-end system.
This is Part 3 and the conclusion of the storage roundtable at which editor-in-chief Mark Ferelli joined a panel of experts to discuss some of the underlying factors driving the storage industry's move toward switched storage back-ends.
James Myers: One of the challenges we have as vendors, and probably one of the reasons this switched back-end has been adopted more quickly in the higher-end storage subsystems, is because some of those switched components are a bit costly, quite honestly.
While the initial deployment solves the immediate bottlenecks and dramatically improves responsiveness and stability, the initial two-server cluster is designed to be open-ended so that additional servers can be added to the cluster as either web front-ends or database back-ends depending on where the increasing load is heaviest.
The key however is the deployment of dual 700 MHz Pentium III CPU's and 256 MB on the database back-end with the I/O supplied by 3 9GB SCSI drives configured as RAID 1 with a hot standby.

An eCache is an out-of-the-box packaged data cache that can be rapidly deployed to hook ERP back-ends
with eCommerce front-ends.
As a result, production lines are set up in back-ends
to produce one type of component efficiently, and then changed over to produce the next.
