An automatic extension of time granted to a taxpayer to file a tax return.

Automatic Extension

An extra amount of time some taxpayers are given to file their tax returns for a given year without needing to file an extension. For example, most U.S. citizens residing abroad are given an automatic extension for two months. See also: Form 4868.
