Austerity Measure Any policy a government implements to reduce its deficit. Austerity measures are adopted when the deficit becomes unsustainable and the government is unable to borrow to finance further spending. Generally, austerity measures consist of some combination of tax increases and spending cuts, often in welfare and social service programs. They derive their name from the fact that they usually are politically unpopular. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
