Association of Southeast Asian Nations

An economic and political alliance of sovereign states in southeastern Asia. It was established in 1967; its members are Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEAN promotes regional cooperation on cultural and political levels, and it provides a forum for the peaceful resolution of disputes. Perhaps most important is ASEAN's work in regional integration. For example, it operates the ASEAN Free Trade Area and encourages members to invest in each other with as few restrictions as possible. It has also concluded common free trade agreements with a number of non-member countries, including Japan and Australia.
