800 Portability

The ability of the owner of a toll free number to maintain the same number even upon changing long distance providers. For example, if a charity that operates an 800 number wishes to switch its long distance provider from Qwest to Verizon or vice versa, 800 portability allows the charity to keep the same number for donations or other purposes. The Federal Communications Commission has required long distance providers to offer 800 portability since 1993 in order to promote competition.
